Discussions from the First Tee is about the love of golf and the people playing the game. I was fortunate to have a friend who took me golfing when I was sixteen. We went to a course built in a field near Mayville, North Dakota. I did not even know that it existed. I borrowed one of their sets of clubs and started to play. A year later I was given a set of golf clubs and I had retired my baseball equipment to play the game. Not that many years later the new course was completed between Mayville and Portland with beautiful grass greens, wide, tree-lined fairways, a driving range, a practice green, and a clubhouse. Later there were cart sheds added and a place to store golf clubs. My love affair started at that time and has continued unchecked for many, many years.
The was a history to the game that had existed for many years and I began to learn more about that and to care for the great players of the day. The man who gave me the golf clubs also gave me the book, “Five Lessons In Golf” by Ben Hogan. Giving golf equipment away became part of what I did because of that and also gave away that book to everyone who I started in the game.
I am looking forward to sharing my stories and hoping that some of you will be willing to share your stories. They will definitely add to the joy of “Discussions on the First Tee…”
